Klaipėda LNG Forum

2010-09-15

Press release______________________________________________________________

On September 16, a forum on the possibilities for construction of a liquid natural gas terminal in Klaipėda will take place at Klaipėda Science and Technology Park. Although the Government of the Republic of Lithuania has taken a decision on the necessity for construction of a liquid gas terminal at the seaport of Klaipeda, this issue has not been widely discussed yet.

The forum will be attended by Lithuanian and foreign scientists, business representatives and the Norwegian expert organization Det Norske Veritas (DNV), having considerable experience of assessment of construction of analogous terminals, technological decisions, and their impact on the environment and economic benefits.

‘DNV is one of the world's leading organizations in the area of managing risk related to projects of different scales in many countries which has long experienceof analyzing prospects of implementation of liquid natural gas construction projects and other important objects. KSTP has established close links with this Norwegian organization, and therefore we expect their independent experts to share their experience and views on the best ways of taking advantage of the possibilities for construction of the object which is of economic importance to Lithuania,' Director Roma Stubrienė spoke about the participants in the forum.

At the forum, the DNV specialists and foreign experts are going to share their experience of the world practice of building such terminals, giving an overview of some particular projects, such as liquid natural gas terminals in Norway and Poland. The scientists of Klaipėda are going to discuss the potential difficulties of construction of a terminalin Klaipėda, favorable conditions for shipping and the impact on the country's industries.

The topicality of the forum is due to the discussion of the possibility for involvement ofthe maritime businesses operating in Klaipėda. This would undoubtedly stimulate development of the maritime sector.

‘Participation of maritime businesses in the construction of the liquid natural gas terminal and its operation will considerably improve Klaipėda's economy and set a precedent for operation of Lithuanian companies and specialists in this area. Our companies have not taken part in construction or logistics of objects of a similar scale so far. Therefore the experience gained will enableus to look for new markets and compete with foreign companies in the future having trained qualified specialists,' Roma Stubrienė pointed out.

DNV is an independent organization providing assistance in risk assessment and management in a number of areas including energy, IT, shipping etc. While headquartered in Oslo, Norway, DNV has worked internationally since 1867 and has established approximately 300 offices in 100 countries. It has a staff of 9000 employed in the international division network.

The Forum will take place at Klaipėda Science and Technology Park (H. Manto str. 84, Klaipėda).
The Forum starts at 10.00 a.m.
