Participants of LNG forum: "Lithuania took one solid step forward"
2011-07-04
A forum concerning the possibilities and perspectives of liquid gas terminal (LNG) took place in Klaipeda. In the event organized by Klaipeda Science and Technology Park (KSTP), LNG specialists from Finland, Norway, Sweden, Germany and Poland shared experience; representatives of Lithuania read their reports. Experts say that Lithuania has set forward in implementing this project, so there is no doubt that an LNG terminal will start functioning in Klaipeda in year 2014, as planned.
"When I visited Lithuania a year earlier, the construction of LNG terminal was still in question. There were discussions between Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia regarding the possible amount of terminals in this region, and their types. Now I see a completely different situation. Lithuania took one solid step forward. The Port of Klaipeda is a great place for a liquid gas terminal to be built in, so I am certain that the terminal will start functioning in 2014. Lithuania has got enough time to implement his project." - said Lars Odeskaug, representative of the TORP LNG company which builds LNG terminals all over the world.
The forum concerning the possibilities of LNG terminal has been organized two years in a row in KSTP. The manager of the Park, Roma Stubriene emphasized that this terminal is important not only for energetic independency of the region. Participants of the forum also discussed other unique solutions for effective use of the terminal.
"The aim of this forum is informing all concerned groups about the possibilities of LNG terminal. More and more ships that use liquid gas are being built in the world, so such terminal is certainly needed in this region. It is forecasted that liquid gas will be widely used in the future as this type of fuel is not only cheaper, but also more environmentally friendly. In the forum, specialists said that LNG can be irreplaceable in public transport as well. Moreover, the emergence of such terminal would give more possibilities the Port of Klaipeda to have a refrigeration terminal" - said the director of KSTP
The LNG forum is a part of project "Clean Baltic Sea Shipping". KSTP implements this project together with partners. The project is partly funded by the EU Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013.
