Project "Submariner"

Submariner. Sustainable Uses of Baltic Marine Resources.

Without a clear sense of future direction, the Baltic Sea Region faces the risk of further developing activities and uses which continue to increase the already strong pressures on the marine environment.

Through increased understanding and promotion of innovative and sustainable new uses of the Baltic Sea, project SUBMARINER provides the necessary basis for the region to take a proactive approach to improving the future condition of its marine resources and the economies that depend on them.

Submariner builds the road for furthering those environmentally friendly as well as economically appealing innovative uses within the BSR, thus contributing toward its aim to become a model region for sustainable sea management. It will do so by focusing its efforts along 3 lines of activity:

  • Production of a compendium: describing current and potential future marine uses by developing a comprehensive inventory of innovative sustainable uses, analysing the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities to the Baltic Sea Region, assessing their environmental and socioeconomic impacts, estimating the market opportunities, assessing the availability and status of necessary technologies, and describing the gaps and obstacles in the legal framework.

  • Development of a roadmap: recommending necessary policy steps to promote beneficial uses and mitigate against negative impacts, including suggested legal changes (e.g. spatial plans), environmental regulations and/or economic incentives. Implementation of regional development activities: testing new uses in real conditions, conducting feasibility studies for new uses in specific areas, assessing technological and financial needs, estimating impacts on environmental and socieconomic conditions, and evaluating specific legal constraints.

  • Building a network: stimulating cooperation among best possible users by connecting currently disjointed constituencies through virtual and real networking, information exchange and cooperation event.

Project duration: 39 months (11.06.2010 - 10.12.2013).

Lead Partner -  The Maritime Institute in Gdansk (Poland).

Project partners: Klaipeda Science and Technology Park and other partners from 8 European countries.

Testimonials about 10 years of cooperation with KMTP

The majority of innovative enterprises start their activities in small teams; therefore, KSTP is the best place to start business. The Park forms ideal conditions for creation and incubation of small enterprises. Small companies especially need help and space where they could grow and improve. I am glad that KSTP makes a very important contribution to promotion of small and medium business.

Chairman of Small and Medium Business Council of Klaipėda City Municipality

Aras Mileška

We are on the move and we are glad that our work is valued, there is no need to prove to anybody that in global modern space only those may remain who bravely implement innovative ideas, apply them in business. It is important for us that our Park community would strengthen and we all would gradually grow, the geography of our activities would broaden, while enterprises were happy by that what we can provide ... I would like to thank everyone who was with us for ten years by the words of French philosopher Blaise Pascal: ‘The past and present are our means: the future alone is our goal..."
